On June 24, 2026, Tencent Video dropped the first official cast announcement for Three-Body 2: Dark Forest (《三体2:黑暗森林》), the second season of China's landmark sci-fi adaptation. Here's what we know — and the one name that's still missing.

The Confirmed Cast

Three core roles have been locked:

- Yu Hewei returns as Shi Qiang (Da Shi) — the gruff, chain-smoking detective who became a fan favorite in Season 1. Yu is also set to lead the spin-off series *Three-Body: Da Shi*, a 12-episode standalone filling the gap between Season 1 and Dark Forest.

- Duan Yihong (credited by his birth name Duan Long on official posters per Chinese naming regulations) steps in as Zhang Beihai — the space fleet commander whose quiet determination masks humanity's most radical plan. Duan has been the fan-cast favorite for years; fan-made edits of his face on Zhang Beihai have circulated Chinese social media since 2023.

- Lin Yongjian returns as General Chang Weisi, reprising his role from Season 1.

The Production Team

The creative core stays intact: Liu Cixin serves as executive producer, Yang Lei returns as director, Tian Liangliang as head writer, and Lu Beke as visual director. This continuity is a strong signal — the team that delivered the 8.7-rated first season is trusted to handle the vastly more ambitious second book.

The Big Question: Who Plays Luo Ji?

Luo Ji — the sociology professor who stumbles into becoming humanity's only hope against the Trisolaran invasion — remains uncast. This is deliberate, not an oversight.

The role is arguably the most demanding in Chinese sci-fi television: Luo Ji transforms from a cynical, pleasure-seeking academic into the Swordholder, a figure who must stare into the abyss of cosmic sociology for 54 years. The actor needs to sell both the "drunkard" and the "saint" phases.

Online speculation has settled on two frontrunners: Hu Ge (the bookish, weathered star of *Blossoms Shanghai* and *Nirvana in Fire*) and Bai Yu (known for *The Long Night* and *Silent Truth*). Both have the acting chops for the role's psychological weight. Other names floated include Qin Hao, Deng Chao, and Zhang Ruoyun.

The production team's refusal to rush the announcement is widely seen as responsible — Luo Ji is the spine of the entire story, and getting it wrong would break the series.

The Spin-Off: *Three-Body: Da Shi*

Running alongside the main production is a 12-episode spin-off centered on Shi Qiang, with Yu Hewei and Zhang Luyi (Wang Miao from Season 1) returning. Production is slated for late 2026.

Schedule & Scope

- 26 episodes for Season 2

- Filming starts July 2026 (mid-next month)

- Production window: ~20 months

- Expected release: 2027-2028, exclusive to Tencent Video

Season 2 will cover the Wallfacer Project, the Dark Forest reveal, and the Droplet attack — arguably the most visually spectacular set pieces in the entire trilogy.

Context for Global Fans

If you haven't watched Season 1 yet: China's Three-Body adaptation (2023) is widely considered the definitive screen version — faithful to the source material in ways the Netflix adaptation (2024) was not, with a grounded, realistic visual style that makes the sci-fi elements hit harder. It holds an 8.7/10 on Douban (China's IMDb). The English-dubbed version is available on multiple streaming platforms globally.

The cast announcement confirms that China is doubling down on its "Three-Body Cinematic Universe" — a rare instance of a single nation betting big on its own sci-fi IP at a scale usually reserved for Marvel and Star Wars.

The Takeaway

Three-Body 2: Dark Forest is shaping up to be the most important Chinese TV production of the decade. The cast choices so far are smart, fan-responsive, and strategically cautious. Luo Ji's reveal — whenever it comes — will be the moment the entire internet holds its breath.
