Zhang Beihai — the man known as the Fifth Wallfacer — is one of the most admired characters in The Dark Forest.
Who Was He?
A political officer in the Chinese Space Force, but everything he did was Wallfacer-level. He disguised himself as a defeatist, killed the old guard of the space industry, hijacked Natural Selection and fled. Every step had one goal: preserve the flame of human civilization.
What If He Had Lived?
If he were the Swordholder:
- He would be colder and more decisive than Luo Ji
- His deterrence credibility could reach 100 percent
- Trisolaris would never dare to move
- Humanity might have secured a much longer peace
If he were in the Deterrence Era:
- He would never allow humanity's post-deterrence indulgence
- He would secretly push for curvature propulsion research
- Cheng Xin taking over the Swordholder role would be impossible
His Tragedy
Everything Zhang Beihai wanted to do was ultimately completed by others. He ignited the spark of escape, but that spark eventually died out in the universe.
