Ye Wenjie: Betrayal or Salvation?

Ye Wenjie is one of the most complex and tragic characters in the Three-Body trilogy. On that night at the Red Coast Base, the signal she sent to the universe changed not only her own fate but pushed all of human civilization toward the abyss.

Is she a betrayer or a savior?

From a betrayal perspective, Ye Wenjie had completely lost faith in human society—her father's tragic death, colleagues' betrayals, and the trauma of a special era convinced her that humanity could not save itself. Inviting Trisolaris to Earth was, in essence, a death sentence for human civilization.

But on a deeper level, Ye Wenjie's actions stemmed from a twisted form of love—she hoped a higher civilization could ""save"" humanity, breaking Earth's cycle of internal strife. She was an idealist, even though that ideal became a nightmare.

Insight: Ye Wenjie's story shows us how extreme despair can distort the most well-intentioned beginnings. She defies simple good/evil dualism—a scientist treating Earth as a laboratory, who became the judge of humanity's fate.
