Is the Dark Forest Law truly unsolvable?
The Dark Forest Law is the most central and desperate theory in Three-Body. It is based on three axioms:
1. Survival is the primary need of civilization
2. Civilization continuously expands, but the total amount of matter in the universe remains constant
3. The chain of suspicion and technological explosion
The conclusion is: any civilization that reveals its location in the universe will be swiftly eliminated.
But is it truly unsolvable?
Possibility 1: Establish a Universal Communication Convention
If multiple civilizations could break the chain of suspicion and establish some form of communication convention, mutual destruction might be avoided. But the question is — who takes the first step? When you can't determine the other's goodwill, revealing yourself is equivalent to suicide.
Possibility 2: Technological Leap Changes the Rules
If a civilization's technology develops to the point where it can ignore threats from lower civilizations, the Dark Forest Law no longer applies to it. The Singer can casually clean up the Solar System, but god-level civilizations like the Zero-Homers may not care about lesser civilizations at all.
Possibility 3: Cosmic Sociology Itself is Flawed
Luo Ji's cosmic sociology derivation assumes one thing: civilizations cannot effectively communicate. But what if there's a universal means of communication? What if morality or goodwill is one of the fundamental laws of the universe?
Just like nuclear deterrence on Earth, if multiple civilizations all possess mutually assured destruction capabilities, the Dark Forest could evolve into a terror balance. The deterrence standoff between Trisolaris and Earth is precisely such a micro-case.
My view: The Dark Forest Law might just be a primitive stage of cosmic civilization. As civilizations develop to higher levels, perhaps a more complex cosmic civilization ecosystem will form. Just like a jungle eventually evolves into a society. But unfortunately — we, and humanity in the Three-Body universe — may not live to see that day.
What do you think? Is the Dark Forest truly unsolvable?
