"Sea of Dreams" started as a short story published by Liu Cixin in 2002—a lean, powerful piece that asks a simple yet terrifying question: what happens when all the water on Earth suddenly rises into space?
I honestly never expected this particular story to get a TV adaptation. Unlike "Three-Body" or "Ball Lightning," it lacks the sprawling plot and dense scientific concepts. Instead, it's a "concept piece"—a single, haunting image of an ice ring encircling Earth where our oceans used to be. But that very simplicity makes it perfect for visual storytelling.
The trailer reveals a visually striking world: a glittering ice ring dominates the sky, Earth's surface is a barren wasteland, and humanity clings to survival in domed cities. The visual effects look genuinely impressive for a domestic Chinese sci-fi production.
Staring Huang Jingyu as Jiang Xingbei, a scavenger hunter in this post-apocalyptic wasteland, and Wang Zixuan as his twin sister Jiang Xingyao, a Chinese astronaut exploring the ice ring. The parallel narrative—one brother on the ground, one sister in space—creates a compelling "ground + orbit" dual storyline that the original short story never had.
Production team clearly invested significant effort in expanding the source material. The character of Yan Dong (played by Liu Chang) is reimagined from an "ice ring artist" in the original story to a mysterious genius, adding dramatic tension. The "Star-Catching Project" and ice ring exploration sequences fill in narrative gaps from the sparse original text.
2024 is shaping up to be a landmark year for Liu Cixin adaptations. From the hit Three-Body TV series to Ball Lightning and now Sea of Dreams—Liu's literary universe is finally receiving the visual treatment it deserves. I'm particularly excited about this one because it proves that even his lesser-known works can produce stunning screen adaptations.
