🚀 The Real Chinese Sci-Fi Scene: Beyond Liu Cixin
I'll be honest — before Three-Body, I couldn't name a single Chinese sci-fi author. After finishing the trilogy, I went on a deep dive. Here's what I found about the incredible world of Chinese science fiction beyond Liu Cixin.
🌟 The Pre-Three-Body Era (1890s-2005)
Chinese sci-fi has a surprisingly long history:
- Lu Xun (鲁迅) translated Jules Verne into Chinese in 1903
- Liang Qichao (梁启超) wrote political sci-fi allegories
- These were more political commentary than pure science fiction
- Sci-fi was tasked with educating youth about science
- Key figure: Zheng Wenguang (郑文光), the "father of Chinese sci-fi"
- Works were heavily controlled by the state
- The 1983 "Anti-Spiritual Pollution" campaign nearly killed Chinese sci-fi
- Only one magazine survived: Science Fiction World (科幻世界)
- Published Liu Cixin's first short stories in 1999
🌟 Must-Read Chinese Sci-Fi Authors
Here are authors every Three-Body fan should check out:
- Best known for: "The Waste Tide" (荒潮) and "AI 2041" (with Kai-Fu Lee)
- Style: Social criticism mixed with hard sci-fi
- English translations: Available from Head of Zeus / Tor
- Why read him: He's like Liu Cixin but more focused on society and technology's human impact
- Best known for: "Folding Beijing" (北京折叠) — Hugo Award winner 2016
- Style: Literary, allegorical, social commentary
- Why read her: She's the second Chinese Hugo winner after Liu Cixin. "Folding Beijing" is a brilliant short story about class division
- Best known for: "Galaxy Heart" series (银河之心)
- Style: Space opera — Chinese Star Wars!
- Why read him: If you want more cosmic-scale Chinese sci-fi, he's your author
- Best known for: "The Redemption of Time" (三体X)
- Style: Three-Body fan fiction turned official!
- Why read him: He wrote an authorized sequel/fan fiction to Three-Body that Liu Cixin himself endorsed
- Best known for: "Hospital" trilogy
- Style: Surreal, Kafkaesque, experimental
- Why read him: If you want something completely different — Chinese sci-fi at its most avant-garde

🎬 Chinese Sci-Fi Films & TV (Non-Three-Body)
- The Wandering Earth (流浪地球) 2019 — Blockbuster! Earth as a spaceship. A must-watch.
- The Wandering Earth 2 (流浪地球2) 2023 — Prequel, even better. One of the best sci-fi films of the decade.
- Moonfall (月球陨落) — Actually directed by Roland Emmerich but Chinese co-production
- Upcoming: Many announced, including adaptations of "The Waste Tide"

Chinese sci-fi is not just "Liu Cixin + others." It's a vibrant, diverse ecosystem with roots going back over a century. The Three-Body phenomenon opened a door — and behind that door is a entire universe of stories waiting to be discovered.
