The Droplet is a Trisolaran probe sent to Earth. It is named for its shape — a perfect teardrop. Its surface is perfectly smooth at the atomic level, made of strong-interaction material. It destroys Earth's entire space fleet in a battle lasting less than 30 minutes.
- Shape: Perfect teardrop, 3.5 meters long
- Color: Mirror-like, reflects everything perfectly
- Surface: Completely smooth — below the atomic level. No molecules, just a continuous surface
- Material: Strong-interaction material — held together by the strong nuclear force, not chemical bonds
- Strength: Indestructible by human weapons
- Temperature: Absolute zero inside (zero entropy)
This is one of the most famous scenes in modern science fiction.
Earth's combined space fleet — 2,000+ warships — is gathered in formation near Jupiter, ready to confront the incoming Trisolaran probe. The fleet represents humanity's greatest achievement.
The Droplet arrives. It does NOT communicate. It simply... moves.
- First pass: Destroys the command ship
- Second pass: Cuts through ships like a hot knife through butter
- Third pass: Targets remaining survivors
- Total time: Less than 30 minutes
- Result: The entire fleet destroyed, scattered across space
The Droplet doesn't use weapons. It doesn't shoot lasers. It just flies through the ships at high speed, using its own body as a weapon — like a bullet passing through paper.
The Droplet is Liu Cixin's brilliant extension of real physics:
- Strong interaction material (SIM): In real physics, the strong force only works at subatomic distances. Liu imagines extending it to macroscopic scales — creating materials held together by the strongest force in nature
- Zero entropy: If a material achieves theoretically perfect order (zero entropy), it would be indestructible
- Perfect reflection: A perfectly smooth surface at the atomic level would reflect all light — making the Droplet effectively invisible from some angles
Tencent version (2023): The Doomsday Battle is depicted in terrifying detail. The Droplet is CGI and looks absolutely beautiful — like liquid mercury. Episode 28-29.
My Three-Body (Season 3): The Minecraft version somehow makes it even more emotional. The Droplet looks like a perfect glass teardrop. The destruction is shown abstractly but powerfully.
Netflix (2024): The Doomsday Battle is shown from various perspectives. The Droplet design is slightly different — more angular — but the impact is equally devastating.
