English: Gravitational Wave Antenna
Related to: Dark Forest Deterrence, Gravity (Ship), Broadcast System
The gravitational wave antenna is a device that uses gravitational waves — ripples in spacetime — to transmit information across the universe. In Three-Body, it is the mechanism behind Dark Forest deterrence, capable of broadcasting a civilization's location to the entire cosmos.
⚙️ How It Works (In the Novel)
Unlike radio waves (electromagnetic radiation), gravitational waves:
- Cannot be blocked by any material
- Travel at the speed of light
- Carry information about massive events
- Can pass through any physical barrier
In the Three-Body universe:- Earth builds a gravitational wave antenna on the ship "Gravity" (万有引力号)
- The antenna can transmit a targeted broadcast: "Trisolaris is located at coordinates X, Y, Z"
- Any civilization receiving this broadcast knows exactly where Trisolaris is
- The Dark Forest law ensures that the recipient will destroy Trisolaris
- This is the ultimate deterrence — mutual assured destruction on a cosmic scale
🌐 Real Science vs. Fiction
- Gravitational waves were detected in 2015 (LIGO) — 5 years AFTER Death's End was published
- Liu Cixin PREDICTED gravitational wave communication before its detection!
- In reality, gravitational waves are extremely weak and hard to generate
- Current technology cannot use them for communication
- Liu imagines a much more powerful, focused gravitational wave generator
- It uses super-dense matter (a 50% light-speed mass) as the wave source
- The broadcast can reach across the entire universe
⚡ Key Role in the Story
The gravitational wave antenna on Gravity creates the balance of terror between Earth and Trisolaris. The Swordholder's threat: "If you attack us, I'll broadcast your location."
When Cheng Xin becomes Swordholder and fails, the gravity wave antenna on Gravity becomes the last hope. The crew debates: broadcast now, even though Earth is already lost?
Gravity's crew votes to broadcast. This act:
- Destroys Trisolaris (attacked by unknown higher civilization)
- Dooms Earth (its location is revealed too)
- But preserves the memory of human civilization
Some humans try to escape by building gravitational wave antenna elsewhere — but it's too late.
- Purpose: To carry and protect the gravitational wave antenna
- Crew: Mutually distrustful Earth-Trisolaris cooperation
- Captain: Zhang Beihai's principles live on in its officers
- Fate: The crew votes for broadcast, destroying both worlds
- Death's End (三体III:死神永生), Parts relevant to Gravity and the deterrence:
- Chapter: "The Gravitational Wave Antenna"
- Chapter: "The Vote" — The crew's decision to broadcast
- Chapter: "After the Broadcast" — The consequences
