One of the most popular discussion topics among Three-Body fans: If Luo Ji hadn't been chosen as a Wallfacer, would humanity have had any hope?

Scenario A: No Luo Ji, But Another Wallfacer Succeeds

Taylor, Diaz, and Hines each had flawed plans, but Hines' "Thought Hard Seal" was actually close to working — if he hadn't been turned by the Trisolarans. If Hines had stayed loyal, the Thought Hard Seal could have been an effective weapon.

But the problem: the Thought Hard Seal doesn't solve the Dark Forest deterrence problem. Without Luo Ji, there's no Dark Forest insight, no deterrence.

Scenario B: Someone Else Figures Out the Dark Forest

Ye Wenjie planted the seeds of Dark Forest theory in a few people — Luo Ji was one. If she hadn't told Luo Ji, would she have told someone else?

The other Wallfacers were too "worldly" — they believed too much in military force, politics, and technology. Luo Ji's detachment was exactly what allowed him to understand the Dark Forest.

Scenario C: Humanity Was Doomed Either Way

This is the darkest — and most likely — answer.

Luo Ji's success was itself a coincidence: Ye Wenjie chose the right person, the Sophons didn't fully understand human thinking, the Trisolarans misjudged the deterrence game…

Without these coincidences, humanity might have been fully destroyed after the Doomsday Battle. Even with Dark Forest deterrence, a different Swordholder (like Cheng Xin) would have failed.

Conclusion

Three-Body's most fascinating quality is that it offers no "standard answer." Luo Ji's success was the result of multiple factors converging. Change one variable, and the outcome changes completely.

Maybe that's what Liu Cixin wanted to say: History is not inevitable. Humanity's fate is not predetermined. Every choice changes the ending.
