🌍 "The Wandering Earth": From 20,000 Words to Box Office Legend
"The Wandering Earth" is a short story published by Liu Cixin in 2000, totaling only about 20,000 Chinese characters. But its 2019 film adaptation became a milestone in Chinese sci-fi cinema.
The Original Story
The original story is darker than the film:
When the sun is about to expand into a red giant, humanity decides to push Earth out of the solar system toward Proxima Centauri. During the journey, Earth's surface freezes over, and human society descends into suspicion and division.
The original ending is more philosophical — people begin to doubt the sun explosion was a lie, "rebellion" breaks out, the "righteous" execute the last Earth faction members — and then the sun explodes.
The Film Adaptation
2019's "The Wandering Earth" (directed by Guo Fan):
- Box office: 4.69 billion RMB (~$670 million)
- Reception: Called "the beginning of Chinese sci-fi cinema's golden age"
- Adaptation: Kept the core premise, significantly changed the plot
Part 3
"The Wandering Earth 3" has been announced with Guo Fan, Wu Jing, Andy Lau, and Shen Teng confirmed.
