✍️ The Making of Three-Body: How Liu Cixin Wrote This Epic

✍️ The Making of Three-Body

Sometimes the story behind a great work is as fascinating as the work itself.

The Seed: 1980s

Liu Cixin began conceiving Three-Body's worldview in the 1980s. He was an engineer at Niangziguan Power Plant, reading astronomy and physics books after work. The "core" — the three-body problem — was something he encountered during this period.

A Long Gestation

From the 1980s to 2006, Three-Body's构思酝酿了近20年. During this time, Liu wrote numerous short stories — "The Wandering Earth," "The Village Teacher," "Ball Lightning" — which built experience and confidence.

Writing Begins

In 2005, Liu Cixin began writing Three-Body proper. He wrote after work, at his dormitory desk, on manuscript paper. He rewrote Chapter 1 seven times.

Serialization

In May 2006, Three-Body began serialization in Science Fiction World. The editor recalled: "When I received the manuscript, I knew from page one this wasn't ordinary sci-fi. It had something… other Chinese sci-fi didn't have."

The Volume

The trilogy exceeds 900,000 Chinese characters. Liu Cixin wrote it all in his spare time:

> "I was writing every day. If not at my desk, then in my head."

Original Title

The original title wasn't "Three-Body." Alternative titles included "Earth's Past" (his original trilogy title), "The Three-Body Problem" (later simplified), and "Cosmic Sociology."

The Biggest Challenge

Not the science. Not the plot. Persistence.

"After work, while others rested, watched TV, played cards — I was writing. No one knew what you were writing, no one guaranteed you'd finish. You just had faith."

After Three-Body

Liu has written almost no long-form fiction since. "Three-Body exhausted everything I had. I need new积累."

Fans are still waiting for his next novel. His answer: "It's on the way. But don't rush me. Good work takes time."

We're still waiting.
