📖 Chinese Original vs English Translation
Ken Liu's translation is widely praised, but some things inevitably change in translation.
Cultural Concepts
"同志" (Tongzhi) → "Comrade"
The Chinese word has three layers:
1. Literal: people with shared goals
2. Political: Communist party address
3. In Three-Body: QY members' address to each other
"Comrade" captures layer 3 but lacks the historical weight of "revolutionary comrade."
"给岁月以文明" → "Give years to civilization"
The Chinese has structural symmetry — "Give years to civilization, not civilization to years." The English can't fully replicate this, but it's an excellent translation.
Footnotes
Ken Liu added extensive footnotes explaining:
- The Cultural Revolution
- Chinese historical figures
- Chinese idioms
These notes don't exist in the original Chinese — the English edition actually has MORE content.
Language Style
Liu Cixin's Chinese is "coldly concise" — short, powerful sentences. English grammar sometimes forces sentences to be longer.
Character Names
Wang Miao — kept pinyin
Da Shi — kept pinyin
Sophon — CREATIVE TRANSLATION! This word was invented.
Which Is Better?
Chinese readers: "The original is irreplaceable."
English readers: "Ken Liu's translation is art."
We recommend: Read both. First your native language, then the other. Two languages, two experiences. That's Three-Body's magic.
