💰 Check Your Bookshelf! That Three-Body English Edition Might Be Worth $1,300+

💰 From $25.99 to $1,300: The Insane Appreciation of Three-Body English First Editions

In November 2014, Tor Books published *The Three-Body Problem* in English for the first time, priced at $25.99. Nobody knew then — eleven years later, this book would become a hot commodity in the global rare book market.

I took a stroll through AbeBooks (the world's largest marketplace for rare and used books) and was genuinely shocked by the prices.

🇬🇧 UK Head of Zeus Edition

The UK publisher released a signed limited edition in 2015 — only 500 copies worldwide. Here's what they're going for now:

- Signed & Numbered First Edition (2015 1st/1st): £895 GBP ≈ $1,130 (Fialta Books, sold out)

- Signed Limited Trilogy Box Set (1 of 500): £995 GBP ≈ $1,260 (Cheltenham Rare Books, sold out)

- Condition notes: "Fresh, clean, very tight. No blemishes, no fading, no remainder marks."

🇺🇸 US Tor Books Edition

The American first editions are also commanding premium prices:

- US 1st/1st Signed Copy — on eBay, ranging from hundreds to over a thousand USD

- Author + Translator (Ken Liu) Dual-Signed Copy — the rarest tier, available at First & Fine Rare Books

- Unsigned US 1st/1st — goes for $100-$300 on AbeBooks

🧮 The Numbers

|:--------|:-------------:|:-------------:|:-----------:|

| US 1st Paperback | $15.99 | $50-120 | 3-7x |

| US 1st Hardcover | $25.99 | $100-300 | 4-12x |

| US 1st Signed | $25.99 | $500-1,000+ | 20-40x |

| UK Signed Limited | ~£50 | £895-995 | 18-20x |

🤔 Why the Surge?

① Liu Cixin rarely does overseas signings. His signed copies are genuinely scarce.

② The Netflix Effect. The 2024 series brought a tidal wave of new readers, driving up collector demand.

③ Hugo Award Legacy. The first Asian novel to win the Hugo — that historical weight adds real value.

④ Genuine Scarcity. Only 500 signed limited sets exist. Once they're gone, they're gone.

💡 What This Means

If you happened to pick up an English first edition while traveling abroad back then… congratulations, it's gone up.

If you didn't — no worries. The real value of Three-Body was never in its price tag.

As Liu Cixin wrote: *"Give civilization time, not time civilization."*

Though if you can have both civilization AND an appreciating book on your shelf — hey, that's not bad either 😄
