🇬🇧 The Shadow Side of Three-Body Universe
In May 2026, Xu Yao, former CEO of Three-Body Universe (三体宇宙) — the company that controls the global IP rights to Liu Cixin's Three-Body Problem — was executed for poisoning his boss, company founder Lin Qi, in 2020.
Xu Yao was a law PhD graduate and Youzu Interactive's former chief risk officer, earning 20 million RMB/year. He meticulously planned the poisoning of Lin Qi, the self-made billionaire who had paid 120 million RMB (~$17M USD) in 2018 to acquire the full Three-Body IP rights. The company he built, Three-Body Universe, was meant to be China's answer to the Wizarding World and the MCU.
But Xu Yao's execution didn't solve the deeper problem: frozen equity.
Since Lin Qi's death, his shares have been mired in inheritance disputes. Multiple stakeholders now disagree on licensing, revenue sharing, and strategic direction. Investment in new projects has stalled as potential backers wait for clarity.
Why This Matters
Three-Body Universe is in an unprecedented multi-platform boom:
- ✅ Tencent's TV adaptation (Yang Lei's acclaimed Season 1 + Dark Forest in production)
- ✅ Netflix's Three-Body Problem (Season 2 in production)
- ✅ Zhang Yimou's theatrical film (in development)
- ✅ Youzu Interactive's video game
- ✅ 'Three-Body 4D Space' immersive experience
- ✅ VR project 'Red Coast Echoes' winning awards
But most of these projects were greenlit before or shortly after Lin Qi's death. As the equity freeze drags on, new project approvals and funding rounds will face obstacles.
Think of it as a real-world Dark Forest problem: the greatest threat to a civilization is not external attack — it's internal governance collapse.
Lin Qi's murder by his own CEO is a story so absurdly dark it could be from the novel itself. But unlike fiction, the damage to the IP's governance structure is real.
Three-Body Universe's valuation is undeniable. But whether the next phase — games, films, theme parks — actually materializes depends on whether the company can emerge from its own corporate Dark Forest.
Xu Yao is dead. The problems he left behind are not.
