The Tencent adaptation of The Three-Body Problem is expanding into a full universe. A spin-off series centered on fan-favorite character Shi Qiang (nicknamed "Da Shi") has officially landed on CCTV's 2026 programming lineup, with Liu Cixin himself serving as executive producer.

What's this show about?

Shi Qiang is the street-smart detective who became one of the most beloved characters in the first season. When physicist Wang Miao was spiraling after learning the terrifying truth about the universe, it was Da Shi who kept his feet on the ground with that unforgettable line: "If it's too weird to be true, there's always a human hand behind it."

The spin-off will follow Shi Qiang's investigations before and during the Three-Body crisis — tracking the Earth-Trisolaris Organization (ETO), uncovering the Trisolaris loyalist underground network, and navigating the dark corners where human conspiracy meets alien invasion.

Why this matters for the Three-Body IP:

This is China's first attempt at a "Marvel-style" sci-fi universe expansion:

- Main trilogy → core storyline

- Character spin-offs → individual narrative arcs

- Potential for more: Luo Ji prequel? Zhang Beihai origin story?

Liu Cixin as executive producer:

Liu has been hands-off with previous adaptations, famously saying he trusts the professionals and only acts as "worldview guardian." His direct involvement in Da Shi signals the importance of this project.

For international fans:

Think of this as Disney+ expanding Star Wars with Andor — a grounded character study set within a massive sci-fi universe. If Tencent's spin-off strategy works, it could influence how Netflix approaches its own Three-Body universe expansion.
