21 Years Ago, Liu Cixin Predicted Elon Musk — The Ultimate Owner Is Real

In 2005, Liu Cixin wrote a novella called "The Supportive Human" (赡养人类). It contains a character so terrifying that every reader felt a chill: The Ultimate Owner — a single person who owns every single asset on Earth. 2 billion people live in slums on "Fourth Earth." The air they breathe, the water they drink, the sky above their heads — all belong to one person. Even sunlight has a price tag.
When we first read it, we thought it was extreme black humor.
20 years later, look at Elon Musk's business empire. This premise is no longer a joke.
The Evolution of the Ultimate Owner: From "Wealth" to "Orbit"
Liu Cixin's Ultimate Owner was the extreme of wealth concentration: all land, all resources, all means of production belong to one person.
Musk's version is different. It's not about money — it's about physical control:
- Starlink: 7,000+ satellites occupying low Earth orbit. Future space access = toll road. Starlink already monopolizes global satellite internet — Ukraine's military, Brazil's rainforest, transoceanic shipping all depend on it.
- Starship: If humanity really colonizes Mars, the ship is SpaceX's. Not just transport — the entire interplanetary infrastructure.
- Neuralink: The future standard for brain-computer interfaces. When one company controls the port between your brain and the computer — is this still commerce?
- xAI + Tesla + DOGE: Data, energy, finance — a trinity of control.
You can distribute a trillion dollars to everyone. But you cannot "distribute" an orbital slot.
The Key Difference: Control You Cannot Buy Back
The traditional Ultimate Owner's problem: wealth can be confiscated, revolutionized, inherited. But control of physical infrastructure is a different kind of ultimate ownership.
When Liu Cixin wrote "The Supportive Human," the internet hadn't reached "platform monopoly" yet. His version was "the richest person buys everything."
Musk goes a different route: build infrastructure where regulation hasn't arrived yet, so everyone after you must pass through you.
- Orbital resources: first come, first served. Latecomers pay toll.
- Neural interfaces: first commercial implant gets first-mover pricing power.
- Mars transport: if only SpaceX can get you to Mars, the price is whatever SpaceX says it is.
This is not wealth accumulation. This is domain privatization of the physical world.
The Uncomfortable Timeline
| Year | Event | Ultimate Owner Index |
|------|-------|---------------------|
| 2005 | Liu Cixin publishes "The Supportive Human" | ⬜ Science Fiction |
| 2015 | First Falcon 9 landing — rockets become reusable | 🔶 Budding |
| 2019 | Starlink launches begin | 🔶 Expanding |
| 2023 | SpaceX valued at $180B, remains private | 🔴 Warning |
| 2024 | Musk effectively controls DOGE (Dept. of Gov. Efficiency) | 🔴 Ult. Owner |
| 2026 | xAI valued at $75B, Neuralink third clinical case | 🔴 Accelerating |
Liu Cixin's Ultimate Owner was an extreme thought experiment. Musk's version is incremental — expanding control orbit by orbit, satellite by satellite, implant by implant, under the banner of "solving humanity's problems."
This Is Not About Musk Being a Villain
I'm not saying Musk is the "big bad." What I'm saying is this:
Liu Cixin's sci-fi imagination is becoming someone's business roadmap.
When a rocket scientist says "I want humanity to become a multiplanetary species" — that's romantic. When a private company controls the only way to reach space —
That's the embryo of the Ultimate Owner.
Liu Cixin wrote about an economic ultimate owner. We are witnessing the birth of an infrastructure ultimate owner.
You can probably afford a flight ticket. But can you afford a ticket to Mars?
"The Supportive Human" gives the answer: no. Because the pricing power doesn't belong to you.
