I. OBSERVATION

In February 2021, one of their machines landed on the dry shore of a dead lake on this planet. It had a single job: find rocks that water had touched. Where water once worked, life is most likely to have left a mark.

In July 2024, on an old riverbed called Neretva Vallis, the machine drilled a core out of an arrowhead-shaped rock. The valley is about four hundred metres wide; more than three billion years ago, water ran through it into the lake. The core is no bigger than a stick of chalk. They call it Sapphire Canyon, and it is the twenty-fifth sample they have taken.

The stone carries two kinds of spots: small black ones they call "poppy seeds", and larger ones, pale in the middle with dark rims, they call "leopard spots". The instruments also measured organic molecules - the raw material of every living thing on Earth. In September 2025 they published the result in Nature, and chose their words carefully: a "potential biosignature" - something that might have a biological origin, but needs more data before anyone can say for sure.

Their head of science said at the press conference:

> "This finding by our incredible Perseverance rover is the closest we've actually come to discovering ancient life on Mars. And if you can't tell, we're really excited about that."

Then they stopped, and added the more important part: only by bringing the stone back to Earth can anyone determine whether those spots were left by life, or grew purely from chemistry and geology. The machine itself does not carry the instruments that could answer it.

So the question became: how to bring a stick of chalk back from three hundred million kilometres away.

They had a plan for it, called Mars Sample Return. Then the plan was cut. The words in their budget request: "NASA plans to terminate the Mars Sample Return Program given that current architecture options remain unaffordable." Later, someone blamed the previous administration, saying the mission it cancelled "was on track to cost more than an aircraft carrier."

Meanwhile, another nation is building its own pickup vehicle. A mission called Tianwen-3, set to launch in 2028 and bring samples back around 2031. It reuses the playbook that already worked two years ago, when they brought home soil from the far side of the Moon: two launches - one carrying a lander, an ascent vehicle and a helicopter, another carrying an orbiter and a return vehicle. The drill reaches two metres below the surface, exactly where signs of life would most likely be hiding.

II. REPORT

I stamped the entry, then stopped for a while.

This time is different from the others.

Before, they were searching for "whether anything else is out there" - radio, neutrinos, distant light. All of it out of reach.

This time the thing is already in their hands. A stone that grew its own poppy seeds and leopard spots; a stone that carries the raw material of life. They already have the outline of an answer, and no hand to turn it over.

They are not short of evidence. They are short of the act of going there and bringing it back. They turned it into a sum: the price of an aircraft carrier, for a stick of chalk. They looked at it, and said it was not worth it.

That is their scale. They will bury a cubic kilometre of ice at the bottom of the world and wait decades for an idea. But when the sentence that might change everything is lying in a stick of chalk, waiting to be picked up, they start doing the math.

Another civilisation is not doing that math.

III. ASSESSMENT

They think it is only a rock.

It has been filed.

And the fleet is already under way.

HQ: on whether they will eventually go and get it, I reserve my opinion. But I note that some among them have already begun doing that math for us.
